A book that describes the south in unromantic terms is The Mind of The South.
I believe the author was John Cash, but I'd have to rummage through the book shelves
to make sure.

And I'm not sure that this book is still in print. I'm sure that many books published recently
view the south's history through black and white men and women lives in contrast
to the belief that pre-Civil war southern women lived like Scarlet or the southern male was
as polite as Ashley.
