I don't see how discussions about what the law should be can be decided by figureing out what the law currently is.

If a significant group of people is under the impression that abortion is murder or that a fetus is deserving of human rights, I'd like to know on what basis they think that. It's clear to me that there's no legal basis for it--which means that they must be incorrect. That leaves me confused and asking questions.

It occurs to me now that what you meant was that they don't think it's murder right now but that it should be. That's quite a different thing. That I can understand.

Then my next question becomes why and how should we change the law to make abortion murder?

You've been very patient. I can appreciate why you might not want to invest further in my education. You seem to be able to articulate a pro-life position in a calm and understandable way, which is rare, and the reason I've been trying to go to school off you.

Generally the government should stay out of funding such highly controversial things.

I come at it from what I think is a simple perspective.

* Legally, a fetus is not a human being and deserving of the rights and privileges of one. U.S. law and eons of common law say so.
* Some people feel very strongly that that should be changed. The only reason I know of is that their faiths tell them so. I don't acknowledge the legitimacy of the government imposing some people's faith-based beliefs on the rest of us.
* This is a very sensitive, personal, and complex subject.
* I am, by nature, a libertarian. I take your point about the government getting involved in the funding of abortions. In fact, I think the government should keep its distance from the whole issue and leave it up to the individual consciences of its citizens.

I ask questions to see if there's anything out there that will change my mind.
