McDonald's tipped to swallow Pret
chain-paper

LONDON, Jan 31 (Reuters) - British sandwich bar operator Pret a Manger is expected to
announce on Wednesday it is selling out to a global fast-foods giant with McDonald's Corp
tipped as the likely buyer, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday.

Pret a Manger, founded by Julian Metcalfe and Sinclair Beecham in 1986, now has a staff of
2,000 and turnover of some 200 million pounds from more than 100 UK shops. It prides itself on
high quality products from natural ingredients.

McDonald's is looking to diversify away from burgers, and its previous moves have included
Aroma, the UK-based coffee shop chain it bought two years ago for 10-15 million pounds, and in
1998 it purchased a minority stake in Chipotle Mexican Grill, a chain of 18 fast foods
restaurants in Denver, Colorado.

Pret a Manger has shown an interest in expanding globally and opened its first U.S. outlet in
New York in July last year.
