Roger - Re: "How safe are INTEL'S plants in Isreal? Why would they build plants there? Tax incentives? Isn't there inherent risk of interuption? "
Last week IDT and Cypress fabs were shut down in California for lack of Electrical power.
You want Intel to build new fabs in California ?
Or perhaps in Taiwan - I hear they haven't had an earthquake there in over a month.
By the way - from the following recent report, it sounds like Intel's fabs in Israel have been doing rather nicely.
{===============================} Tuesday January 30, 6:00 am Eastern Time Intel Israel chip exports hit $2 billion in 2000
JERUSALEM, Jan 30 (Reuters) - Intel(NasdaqNM:INTC - news), the world's biggest maker of microprocessors, said on Tuesday chip exports from its Israeli subsidiary hit a record $2 billion in 2000, more than double 1999's level of $810 million and making it the country's leading high tech exporter.
Intel's Kiryat Gat plant accounted for $1.3 billion, while exports from its Jerusalem plant and research and development centre in Haifa were $300 million each, the company said in a statement.
It said exports totalled $5.5 million a day, while exports per worker totalled $400,000. Intel employs 5,200 people in Israel.
Since Intel began operations in Israel in 1974, the company said it had invested $2.7 billion in the country and received $800 million in governmental grants. |
