If anybody can learn from past mistakes, it's Trip Hawkins.

There's no money to be made in hardware. You have to sell it at a loss to be able to sell the software that makes money. Few companies are willing to do that. Panasonic had deep pockets and they wouldn't do it. That's why 3DO had to reinvent itself from a hardware company to a software company. That's also why Sega is giving up on the Dreamcast. 3DO was right on that one. I'm willing to bet that Trip's right on X-box as well.

Microsoft may have a lot of money to throw around, but they are not known for making hardware.

If X-box is a hit, 3DO can reverse course and start making games for it any time they decide. Making games for the X-box is supposed to be like making games for a PC -- and 3DO already makes games for PC's.

If 3DO devotes resources to develop for X-box and MS fails to deliver, 3DO will have wasted valuable resources. The best they could hope for is that they could port the games to PC's -- and that market is not as strong as the console market.
