SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 4, 1997--Terayon Corp. today announced the impressive initial results of field tests of its high-speed cable modem systems as part of a trial to deliver data services across an all-coaxial cable television system.
Terayon has just completed tests with Sumitomo Corp. over a large all-coaxial system serving over 62,000 homes passed in Urawa, Japan. The tests of Terayon's high-speed, 14 megabit per second, two-way cable modem demonstrate its ability to deliver reliable data services over systems with severe upstream noise interference.
According to Terayon CEO Zaki Rakib, "These tests show that Terayon's cable modem systems will perform over the broadest range of cable systems today -- ranging from all-coax systems, common to many cable plants throughout the world, to more highly upgraded fiber-reinforced or hybrid fiber/coax (HFC) systems. Terayon thus provides cable operators with a major economic advantage through its ability to be deployed over a wider range of plants with significantly lower upgrade costs and faster time-to-market."
I. Momota, Sumitomo Deputy General Manager for Information and Telecommunications, stated, "Terayon's cable modems have demonstrated stunning performance over large, highly aggregated all-coaxial, tree-and-branch cable networks. We believe that Terayon's robust S-CDMA cable modem systems will make a tremendous difference, as we deploy broadband data services across Japan."
Terayon's cable modems were tested over three large coaxial systems serving up to 25,000 homes, and then over a large, aggregated cable network serving more than 62,000 homes. The tests were made at 15 megahertz center frequency -- an upstream region with significant interference from impulse noise, narrowband, and wideband interference from a variety of sources.
In tests over the combined 62,000-home system, the Terayon TeraComm cable modem system provided 98% error-free operation, and even better performance in the product's rate-adaptive mode. The results show the TeraComm system's ability to successfully overcome severe plant noise, providing reliable and uninterrupted high-speed data services over cable. This demonstrates that the TeraComm system has the resilience to be deployed over pure-coaxial plants without the major plant tightening that is characteristic of other cable modem systems.
These tests confirm the ability of Terayon's robust S-CDMA cable modem systems to:
-- operate over any type of cable plant -- from all-coax to
well-maintained HFC systems
-- serve a broad range of customers -- from residential to
commercial
-- provide a wide variety of high-speed broadband services
Terayon has developed a highly robust cable modem access system based on S-CDMA (Synchronous-Code Division Multiple Access) technology. Terayon offers a complete cable modem system via the TeraComm Data Network, which includes the TeraPro cable modem, the TeraLink(TM) 1000 Master Controller, and the TeraView(TM) Element Management System. These work in conjunction with Cisco Systems routers to provide a robust end-to-end system for data over cable.
Terayon Corp. supplies innovative Broadband Access Systems for the rapidly growing markets for high-speed data and multimedia communication over cable networks. The company's patent-pending S-CDMA-based cable modems and cable headend concentrators are marketed to the cable industry worldwide. The company was founded in 1993, and has headquarters at 2952 Bunker Hill Lane, Santa Clara, California 95054.
