900 MHz Durons and 1.3 GHz Athlons Soon? (AMD)

Thanks to KH, who ran across this very interesting post lostcircuits.com. indicating that the Duron 900 has made an appearance on a distributor's price list. Beyond this, however, we have recently heard reports from reliable sources that AMD is beginning to ship not only the 900 MHz Duron, but 1.133 GHz and 1.3 GHz Athlons as well. AMD has indicated a first-quarter launch for 1.3 GHz chips, so it may be that an early February launch is in the cards.

Nice link.
Check this out from the lost circuit link from Ace's post. Finally it looks like someone outside of AMD took the time to see how Athlon would work as a mobile product without even going to Palomino and post those results.

<How do 606MHz @ 1.1V and 25°C CPU temp under full load sound? (water 22°C and air 20°C)

606MHz => 1.100V (ca 12.2W)
700MHz => 1.175V (ca. 17W)
800MHz => 1.275V (ca 22.5W)
900MHz => 1.375V (ca. 29W)
1000MHz => 1.450V (ca.36W)
1200MHz => 1.700V (ca 60W)
1262MHz => 1.825V (ca.72W)

In some cases I can even run lower and it runs fine but H.Odas Hot CPU Tester gives me a Matrix error after a couple of hours. So I consider it only 99.5% stable. >

This shouldn't be a surprise to people who know a thing or two about how mobile chips work but the data should ally the fears of some of the doubters who were concerned about power in AMD laptops.

It is really sad that AMD has this capability for a year and has been unable to get a platform built around it. Thinking of what a 800MHz mobile CPU would have done in Q2 2000 makes me shake my head in disbelief about AMD management.

Fortunately for the longs Palomino is significantly better in power and performance. It also appears that the much delayed FSB133 infrastructure is ready so 1.33 launch based on Thunderbird core should be imminent.

I am just hoping that these guys at AMD can close on the HP and other notebook deals as the rumor mill suggests. Especially on the key corporate designs since AMD's growth will be stalled quickly without corporate design wins. The runup of late seems to hint of good things to come but given the disappointments of the last year, I would like to see it happen before I believe.

Good luck to longs.
