Why this ongoing need to be paranoid? Especially when the world has been the most peaceful in many decades or even centuries.

Things where mostly pretty peaceful for the US in between WWI and WWII. We cut our military in size and reduced its readiness. We paid the price early in WWII. We paid a similar price early in Korea. Now it would take longer to rebuild if we had to and we might have less time to respond should a new threat or crisis arrises. I'm not saying we should be paranoid, just prepared.
