RECAP & STOCKS TO WATCH FOR THURSDAY, 2-1-01

The major indexes diverged today as traders and investors digested the latest decision by the FOMC to cut short-term rates by an expected 50 basis points, and also to retain its easing bias. Volatility increased dramatically on the news, as a battle ensued between those who had been looking to sell the news, and those who were looking to buy the dips. Chip stocks once again showed resilience, even after a warning by Applied Materials (AMAT), which said revenues would be 7-10% below expected levels, causing it to miss Q1 EPS estimates.

The Nasdaq Composite sank 65 points to close at 2,772. Volume was 2.4 billion shares, with 138 new highs compared to 18 new lows. Blue chips managed a small gain as the Dow added 6 points to finish at 10,887. Volume on the Big Board was 1.2 billion shares with 256 stocks making new highs compared to 3 new lows.

Although the rate cut was expected and factored somewhat into the markets, the bigger picture shows that the Fed is acting aggressively to keep the economy alive, which should help to maintain the recovery we’ve seen in stocks.

From a technical standpoint, the Nasdaq Composite has formed another “evening star” on the daily chart, indicating a short-term reversal. Support on the Nasdaq Composite stands at 2,700-2,680, with resistance at 2,900-3,000. Support on the Semiconductor Index (SOX) stands at 675, the index’s 20-day Moving Average, with resistance in the 750 area.
