Initial numbers from Sprint PCS and VZ:

Sprint PCS added 1.25 million customers, matching Merrill Lynch & Co. analyst Linda Mutschler's estimate. For the year, Sprint PCS added almost 4.1 million customers and had 9.85 million at the end of 2000. Affiliates, which sell mobile-phone service in smaller markets under the Sprint PCS name, ended the year with more than 800,000 customers.

Average monthly revenue per subscriber rose to $60 from $58 a year ago. For the year, average monthly revenue was more than $59, Sprint said, up from $58 in 1999.

Verizon Wireless added 1.2 million net new customers during the fourth quarter, 5.9 percent more net additions than in fourth-quarter 1999. The total number of customers grew 15.6 percent year-over-year to 27.5 million.

Wireless revenues for the quarter grew to $4.1 billion, up 16.7 percent from fourth-quarter 1999.
