Stock options have only really come into vogue since the tax law made high salaries cost prohibitive. Thus, we haven't seen any implications when the economy has gone through a difficult recession, so there isn't enough data to prove or disprove that contention.

I can tell you that in company specific situations have taken what I have considered to be inordinate risks that harmed shareholders. The only justification that I saw for such high risk action is that it was the only way that management could get paid on their options.
