Antman--

I'm not entirely convinced that the printing is solely related to the FED's desire to see the "market" kept afloat though that effect has certainly been a "bonus," no?

I would argue the printing is also related to "shocks," real or perceived.

No other explanation for massive printing in the face of rate increases-massive printing in the face of rate decreases.

I think Uncle Al's actions since about summer '99 belies that he's lost what little control he had as the globe's central banker. He's simply a fireman now.

And that's too frightening a thought for many...so they cast about for seemingly logical explanations such as the FED must fund the rate cut with liquidity or the FED floods the market with liquidity because it's "crooked."

---------------------------

and what do you believe the point of printing is?
do you believe there is a one for one correspondence of printing to the value of stocks? i.e. that the banks simply invest it in stocks or pass it on to people that invest it in stocks?

tony dwyer is suggesting today that the fed really wants the market to go up so as not to discourage the consumer. that the real economy is their mission and the stock market is of great impact to consumer spending patterns.

one thing that troubles me about this thread is that let's say the fed simply prints because it's crooked and it wants stocks to go up because fed governors and their cronies have big portfolios...which yields to the conclusion that "we're doomed" and sarcastic comments about this unethical printing behavior.
