Wireless Multimedia Forum to Debate Proposed Standard At Internet World Wireless 2001
DARIEN, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 1, 2001--Penton Media (NYSE: PME - news) today announced that members of the Wireless Multimedia Forum (WMF) will meet at Internet World Wireless 2001 on February 22, 2001 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, New York, NY to review its proposed wireless multimedia standard.
As a sponsor of Internet World Wireless 2001, the Wireless Multimedia Forum will provide all Internet World Wireless attendees the opportunity to access wireless decision makers and learn more about version 1.0 of its Recommended Technical Framework Document (RTFD).
``By selecting our event as the venue at which to review their RTFD, the WMF is sending a clear message that Internet World Wireless is the place where decisions are being made that will affect the direction of the industry,'' said Dean Russo, Group Show Director for Internet World Wireless. ``It is a privilege to host the Wireless Multimedia Forum and give our attendees and press the opportunity to witness this critical review process.''
The Wireless Multimedia Forum, managed by Stardust.com, is an international, multi-vendor forum and gathering point for vendors developing products, services and information focused on the delivery of rich media content to the exploding number of mobile, wireless devices. WMF has over 50 contributing member companies that include such names as: Cisco, Intel, Lucent, Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, NTT DoCoMo, Sprint PCS, and Toshiba.
During Internet World Wireless 2001, the WMF forum will be focusing on their RFTD, which specifies a standardized set of technologies to be used consistently by all industry players in the seamless, end-to-end delivery of streaming multimedia content across wireless and wired networks.
``By making a cohesive technical framework and compatibility testing available to all members of the wireless multimedia industry, we are reaching milestones in enabling the proliferation of innovative, content-rich mobile services,'' noted Martin Hall, CTO, Stardust.com.
The forum will be open for all attendees to discuss how this new standard will provide substantial new revenue stream opportunities for content developers, service providers and equipment-makers, as well as new application choices for users. The open sessions are as follows:
RFTD Authors Roundtable Discussion - 4:00-4:45 P.M. Thursday
Moderated by Martin Hall, members of the press and conference attendees will be encouraged to present questions to the authors. As the RTFD is a highly-technical document, Hall will act as a ``translator'' between the authors and the participants.
General WMF Member Meeting - 5:00-6:30 P.M. Thursday
This is a meeting of the WMF members and any Internet World Wireless attendees and members of press who would like to learn more about the forum's work and goals.
``This is the first time a forum has existed in support of interoperability streaming media-whether wireline or wireless,'' noted Iraj Sodagar, WMF Technical Working Group chair and director of advanced architectures at PacketVideo Corporation in San Diego. ``RTFD implementation and interoperability testing should enable interoperable streaming multimedia services - such as video e-mail and sports and news clips - to be delivered over wireless IP networks to any mobile device beginning this year,'' he said.
Internet World Wireless 2001 runs from February 20 - 23, 2001 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City. Additional information, including a full conference sketch, can be found at internetworld.com. |
