P4 already needs two channels to equal the performance of a 1GHZ PIII / Athlon

...sure... if all you want to do is run Microsoft Word fast... yipee... when you get to the point where you can type 500WPM and are limited by the speed of the P4 on a word processor, you'll have a case...

I'll grant you that certain compromises were made in the design of the P4. I will NOT grant you that it merely equals the performance of the 1GHz K7/P3. It shows a lot more potential than that.

The same criticisms were leveled at the Pentium when it first came out by the same type of smug detractor which appears to be in fashion all over the internet today.

If the P4 is such a bad design, then why is AMD adopting some of its more controversial features in the K8? The K8 jumps up to an 18-stage pipeline if memory serves and adopts SSE/SSE2. The SPEC scores for the P4 show that it has a lot of performance headroom which current software doesn't even begin to exercise.
