When we get into truths--things some of us just *know* and other of us just don't *get*--we have no basis for working out any conflicts. I don't see any civilized way to resolve them but letting everyone make their own choices until such time as a reasonable consensus evolves.

Is there no ideas about truth that some one could hold, that you would not try to prevent that person from acting on?

No matter how strongly we feel. No matter how true our truth seems to us. People of good will don't impose their truths on others.

I hate to bring the slavery analogy for a second or third time (and again I am making an analogy between the to conflicts, not trying to say that one side or the other is the same as those supporting slavery and so "obviously wrong") , but there was no consensus in the US about slavery prior to the civil war. Should the North not have tried to restrict the expansion of slavery into new territories before the war? Should the victorious north have not imposed an end to slavery on the south?

Also even if I accept your idea that "people of good will don't impose their truths on others", it would require the assumption of your opinion about the truth of this matter for that to be the definitive word on abortion. After all if the fetus is human then the pro-choice side is imposing its "truths" on the unborn children. Both sides are from the viewpoint of their opposition attempting to impose their ideas about truth on the other side.
