The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday, Jan. 9, edition that Hunt Oil's takeout offer for Berkley Petroleum comes up short on the value of the firm's promise. The Globe's Vox column says Berkley's properties -- particularly those in California -- had a lot of credible observers excited before Hunt made its move. Some enthusiasts predicted discoveries that would make Berkley worth $13 a share or more within a year. It is understandable, then, that the market expects a higher bid to emerge. Given the potential upside, plus the requisite premium, Berkley should go for a least $12 a share, says The Globe. Investors who missed out should nonetheless keep an eye on this story. There will be more takeovers -- Numac Petroleum and Encal Energy often mentioned as targets -- and this deal will largely determine what premium they would fetch.
