Re: The Prayer of Jabez
The first 4 chapters in 1 Chronicles essentially have nothing but "Etam begat Jezreel, Jezreel begat ..." For example, "The descendants of Judah: Perez, Hezron, Carmi, Hur and Shobal. Reaiah son of Shobal was the father of Jahath, and Jahath the father of Ahumai and Lahad."
Thousands of years of Jewish history - one name after another, with no break in the list of Jewish ancestors.
Until 1 Chronicles 4:9 and 4:10 ... "Now Jabez was more honorable than his brothers, and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, 'Because I bore him in pain.' 10 And Jabez called on the God of Israel saying, 'Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!' So God granted him what he requested."
And then, back to name after name for thousands of years.
So, this Jabez must have really been notable. And why? The only things we know about him are that he prayed the "Jabez prayer," which I have quoted above, and that God blessed him, enlarged his territory, kept him from evil, and kept His hand on him.
So the author of the book, "The Prayer of Jabez," reasoned that it was a prayer that should be prayed. Daily. The author tried it and found that God does indeed answer the prayer. That is what the book is all about. My wife and I read a borrowed copy of the book on Sunday. (It's very short and easy reading.)
