HK Telecom Authority Modifies PCCW-HKT License
Updated: Wednesday, January 31, 2001 07:15 AM ET HONG KONG (Dow Jones)--The Hong Kong Telecommunications Authority has approved the modifications of the Fixed Telecommunications Network Services license held by Pacific Century CyberWorks-Hong Kong Telecom Ltd. (PCW, news, msgs), the Hong Kong authorities said Wednesday.
The Hong Kong government noted in a statement that after the modifications, which PCCW-HKT had asked for and which are effective immediately, PCCW-HKT Telephone Limited and PCCW-HKT International Limited will hold separate licenses and PCCW-HKT CAS Limited will no longer hold an FTNS license.
Until now, PCCW-HKT International, PCCW-HKT Telephone and PCCW-HKT CAS jointly and severally held the license.
PCCW-HKT International's new license allows the company to operate external facilities, such as cable and radio-based external facilities, as well as provide external gateway services on a wholesale basis, the Hong Kong authorities said.
PCCW-HKT Telephone's new license allows it to provide services on a retail and wholesale basis.
"As no new right has been granted, the modification has no impact on the Moratorium of not issuing new local wireline-based FTNS licences before 2003," the statement said.
Both licenses for PCCW-HKT International and PCCW-HKT Telephone are valid for 15 years from June 29, 1995, when the original license was granted.
