PNG: Gas project wants poll position
The Australian, February 1
BY NIGEL WILSON

The Queensland election is delaying completion of sales contracts for the proposed Papua New Guinea (PNG) gas pipeline. The $A3.5bn project will provide a link between Queensland and PNG. Chevron spokesman, John Powell, says that the new Queensland Government will have to act promptly after the election in order to finalise gas sales contracts between the project's partners and Queensland's energy suppliers. The latter include Energex, Ergon Energy and Tarrong Power. The pipeline project has been delayed due to the 2000 merger between Exxon and Mobil, and more recently by the State election, which will be held on 17 February 2001.
