i always like to point out that options have a value. If I were to sell just a 2 year option on csco at current market price, what would someone be willing to pay?

the options that have been given to employees in the past had great "market value". Instead of giving those options to employees csco could have sold the options on the open market. What effect would that have had on the stock? The could have raised huge amounts of cash buy selling those options instead of giving them to employee's. With this in mind, it's clear that options have a value and giving them to employees should be considered an expense.
