<<A GSM/1X chip does away with the roaming issue, kills GPRS/EDGE, allows carriers to start building out immediately, handsets are available that work, allows them to get to 3G via GSM/1XEV, and would save the carriers billions of dollars.>>

Potentially the holy grail in chipland. If wCDMA continues to slip further out in time and more carriers begin to question the costs, AND if 1X deployment (and consumer takeup) accelerate in Korea, U.S. and Japan, then the GSM/1XEV path becomes more likely, IMO. Maybe even probable.

The critical element for wCDMA seems to clearly be the handsets. Ironically, Q may be the only party that can produce a wCDMA handset chip anytime soon, as well as the only party that can produce a GSM/1XEV handset chip. What a dilemma. I hope both chips are on the roadmap at Spinco.
