I hate to bring the slavery analogy for a second or third time

Me, too. None of these historical examples is sufficiently parallel to inform our discussion.

In one and only one way I think it is sufficiently parallel. That is it is a very controversial issue, that there was no consensus on. It was of course even a bigger controversy then the abortion issue, but I can't think of any other specific issue in US history that has equal or greater controversy and lack of consensus over a period of time. Some people who make the claim that they would not support imposing any moral idea on some one else when there is no consensus, would still have imposed an end of slavery on the slaver owners if they were in that situation and had the power to do so. Note I am not saying that you necessarily would do so, my earlier posts where asking that question. From some of your responses It appears that you would opposed slavery but would do so by trying to establish a consensus against it.

Why don't you consider what the shoe feels like on the other foot. Try my example about requiring a permit to have a baby. Say that I were to gather a significant minority of people who were dedicated to implementing that. How would you feel? Would you think we had the right to impose that on you?

I would oppose that significant minority just as you oppose the pro-life movement. My main point when mentioning a significant minority was in regard to federal funding of abortions. To actually succeed in outlawing abortion the situation would probably have to change so that a majority was pro-life. (And since you might ask. I would oppose the requirement for a permit to have a baby even if a strong majority was in favor of it. In that situation my opposition would probably be futile but it would continue anyway).
