Will January History Repeat Itself?
January 2001 will be remembered as the month when the market rebounded. The historical trend is, as January goes, so does the rest of the year.
The Nasdaq telecoms were up nearly 20% in January, the Nasdaq composite up more than 12%. The Dow inched up just under 1%.
In the last 20 years, the January market has correctly predicted the outcome of the year every year except 4 times, ‘82, ‘84, ‘92 and ‘94.
In odd numbered years, when a New US Congress convenes, like this year, the direction of the S&P in January has been perfect in predicting the year’s outcome. The S&P 500 rose 3.5% in January.
While all of this may sound like reading tea leaves, the historical trends of the market cannot be ignored.
