Would not a 1X/GSM chip offer:

1. True worlwide roaming.

2. Would it not allow carriers to immediately and simply switch out base station channel cards which would give them a system with higher capacity and 144k speed available now while not having to disturb their existing GSM customer base. Then they slowly phaseout GSM only phones and the migration to 3G becomes automatic at a much lower cost.

3. If one carrier did make the switch wouldn't the rest have to follow. How would they compete with GPRS?
