No, the purpose bland refers to is "life's". Life acts purposively. Even at the most miniscule level. All cellular processes are purposeful. They have a consistent end and a consistent means they follow to produce that end. They are organized in a specific fashion to accomplish specific purposes. It's not a perfectly random jumble of events.
