Winter's not over yet...

Natural gas rose nearly 16% yesterday on news of an arctic front moving into the MidWest and predictions of higher demand over the next week. The March NYMEX contract up another 7%-plus to $6.90.

As we have said in the past, gas will continue to trade on weather news through the end of March. And, if current patterns hold, winter will end with storage near historic lows.

The consensus at the CSFB Energy Summit this week is that gas prices will average in the mid-$5 range through the year. However, if demand is higher than expected due to new power plants on-line this summer, the upside could be significant, raising the average price to above $6.

More on gas issues in a column soon from the summit.
