Why are Member Firms Dropping Out from IMT-2000 Consortiums?

A substantial number of firms have been dropping out from consortiums set up by Korea Telecom and SK Telecom for IMT-2000 services. At Korea Telecom, about 20-30 of the 630 firms that had been listed as members of its IMT-2000 group when KT applied for its license, have dropped out. Member firms of the KT consortium are due to kick in their financial contributions by February 13.

About 10 of the 783 firms in the SK Telecom IMT-2000 consortium have decided not to participate. The due day for paying into the firm¡¯s capital is February 8.

As a result, about W50-60 billion worth of forfeited shares of the two consortiums is expected to be offered to investors.

According to industry watchers, reasons for the withdrawals include liquidity problems at venture firms. The two consortiums have also been arguing for more time before the launch of IMT-2000 services, saying that business prospects have become increasingly unclear.
