Welcome to the GP Maps Sytem. Now you really can do something about the weather.
The GP Maps System provides cost effective, on-demand information for effective anti-icing and de-icing decision making. GP Maps, utilizing differentially corrected GPS, and combining unique thermal mapping and continuous friction testing, empowers you with the information required to decide in advance:
• What chemical to use (anti-icing, de-icing) • How much to use • Where to use it, and • When, or equally as important, when not to use it.
In turn, the pavement owner realizes
• Increase operational readiness • Reduced pollution • Reduce cost of chemical usage.
Background
Historically, snow desks have had to rely on fixed field temperature sensors and on the observation of snow removal crews. Sensors do not account for ambient temperature conditions such as wind chill; and manpower tends to “play it safe.” This results in the excessive use of anti-icing and de-icing materials. With the increasing demand for prevention of ground water contamination, a move to more expensive and “environment friendly” materials has occurred. Significantly higher costs are now being incurred by airports.
Solutions
To more effectively determine the optimal applications of anti–icing and de–icing chemicals, the GP Maps System has been developed utilizing several leading edge technologies. The GP Maps System provides differentially corrected GPS location logging of current pavement surface temperature, ambient air temperature, and electronic decelerometer, or friction tester data. This data is simultaneously available to both the runway inspection vehicle operator and the Snow Desk, where it is simply and clearly displayed on a site specific airfield map for analysis and pro–active decision making. Printed records of runway conditions by exact position can be generated while user–friendly control is possible with a simple touchscreen.
Safety & Savings
Now informed decisions can be made safely, quickly, and accurately with significant reductions in the costs associated with anti–icing and de–icing. The savings of just one truckload of chemicals per year will pay for the GP Maps System.
