Another field research report on Tamagotchis:

Last week a friend of my wife's was visiting and wanted to know what that "white egg with buttons" on our coffee table was. Fortunately the Tamagotchi was between critters, so I fired up a new pet to show her what it was all about. She ended up borrowing the Tamagotchi for the afternoon and then for the week because she got attached to the pet. She came back to visit her mother mid-week and forgot to bring the Tamagotchi with her. A few times during the day she almost drove back home (65 miles away) to get it. Yesterday she called to say that her Tamagotchi and its new friend were doing well. I asked her "what friend?" She said her husband and all of his 20-ish buddies at his car stereo shop (all as in EVERYONE in the shop) had gotten Tamagotchis.

From my (limited) research, Tamagotchis are confirmed hits with the following demographics:

my 10-month-old son (who likes the beep sounds)
grade-school kids
early 20's people
late 20's people
middle-age professor types

And they are confirmed non-hits with the following demographics:

mid 70's people in eastern Colorado
my mother

My wife's friend also said that she saw GigaPets on the shelf with the Tamagotchis. She didn't even consider buying a GigaPet. She said, "you can do way more with the Tamagotchi." I am going to Toys R Us and Kay Bee Toys tonight to see if I can find a GigaPet. Has anyone else found a GigaPet?

Kirk
