There was another reason why energy conservation was important in the 70's. Back then our society still remembered JFK's words "ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country"

If a politician made a remark like that now, his career would be over. President Reagan taught us (in the terms of Ayn Rand) that the only true value is monetary self-interest.

Forget paying off the debt. We would rather have a tax cut. We wanna have our tax cut! Wanna, wanna, wanna. Forget the kids and the $5 trillion we owe. Gimme my tax cut!!!!!!
