Webster,

while everything you said is true and is possibly the path that Jorma has chosen for Nokia's destination, all I wanted to point out is Nokia has a choice, a very obvious choice. Embrace QCOM.

Backwards compatibility is going to be very important and it will be a big money maker before, during and after the world finally reaches 3G. We will need multi mode cdmaOne/1x/1xEV/GSM/wCDMA/AMPS handsets. (did I leave out a few?) Now think about this for a minute, how many generations of handsets would that be, between now and 3G? I can almost hear those cash registers ringing.

Of all the combinations, one of the most significant multi mode products is going to be the GSM/CDMA/AMPS tri mode. Though we may be biased here, QC is clearly in the drivers seat here. Nokia can assure themselves of a share in the lead position by embracing and working with QC, with the GSM stack and their world leading name in exchange.

Unfortunately for Jorma, this window of opportunity is starting to close. The more they procrastinate, the less Nokia has to offer QC. This window will slam shut on Nokia completely, if QC signs some type of a deal with anyone who has the GSM stack to offer.

So logic dictates that Nokia needs to act immediately. Winter will be over soon. May be some blood will flow back and put some sense in those frozen Nordic minds.

Ramsey
