My sense of the difference between justice and vengeance is that the former focuses on respecting the injury to the victim and the latter focuses on punishment for the perpetrator.

Karen, could you expand on the idea of "respecting the injury to the victim".

Also what about punishment as a means of deterence? That isn't directly focuses on respecting the injury of the victim, but most people would say that it is not merely vengence either.
