q_long,

<< The 5185i is approved and selling at Verizon >>

Correct.

Yes

<< and uses a NOK ASIC >>
Yes

<< That was my understanding ... and some could come out of Korea as well as Mexico.

I would love a definate answer on this one

<< I'll add one thing here.>>

<<It is my understanding that Verizon will not release on the 6185i until the messaging
problem with the 5185i is solved. >>

The 6185 acceptance is independant of the 5185i. As I understand the 5185i is not and will not be a data capable handset. Verizon will not release the 6185i without messaging the 5185 is bare bones and will not have messaging or data according to the press release. The 6185 approval is pending on its own merits (or lack of) the 6185 is a upgraded data capable version of the 5185i.

<< I would guess that the won't take delivery of more 5185i's until the messaging problem is
solved, and the 5185i really sticks out like a sore thumb in the tri-mode lineup for lack of
browser.>>

Not sure I dont think it was ever the plan to have messaing in the 5185i its selling as far as I know.

<< I think the messaging problem will be solved, and existing 5185i's will be upgraded ...
possibly OTA for the ones in the field, now that Verizon has added that capability
nationwide. >>
NOK might very well work through the messaging bug I am not qualified to answer how complex this problem is to solve. Regardless of messaging, I would expect the 5185i to continue at least until 1x. IMO NOK's handsets are quickly becoming outdated and wearing on folks selling in the CDMA world.
