US employment growth fuels hopes of a soft landing

Jobs growth in the US in January hit a nine-month high, US Labour department figures showed on Friday, adding to hopes of a soft landing for the economy.

The department said 268,000 non-farm jobs were created last month, well above forecasts and the highest since April. Private-sector job gains hit a four-month high.

The dollar, dented over the past week by a series of gloomy news, initially shot almost a cent higher against the euro before giving up some of its gains.

"These figures have at least tempered some of the worst fears about a US crash landing," said Mark Cliffe, chief economist at ING Barings.

The report did show the fastest one-month increase in the US unemployment rate since March 1999, from 4 per cent to a 16-month high of 4.2 per cent.
