Bland has developed considerable expertise at spending money, but no matter how adroitly he spends it, he cannot buy self-discipline and self-sacrifice and the concept of delayed gratification for those who need it.

I was watching some talking heads this morning on the subject of the Middle East. They were saying that there are problems in the world and there are messes. Problems can be fixed. Messes you just try to contain. Since the failure of the last peace effort, everyone has concluded that the Middle East is an incorrigible mess. I think that what you and X are talking about also falls into that latter category.
