- 700 million subscribers worldwide at end of Y2K, out of a worldwide population of 6 billion -- most of who are children in the third world.

- Even the poorest EU country, Greece, has a penetration rate of more than 50%.

- Anemic demand for wireless internet -- WAP failed miserably, other internet initiatives are fairing poorly. Only cheap SMS seems to be used.

Seems to me that the mobile phone industry is fast approaching saturation. And there are no fancy new apps every year to prod people to upgrade, like the PC industry. People use their mobile phones overwhelmingly for one application: talking. Their PC at home or work is far superior and far cheaper for everything else.

Is it possible that the growth projections for this industry will turn into mirages in 2001, and even the mighty Q will disappoint?
