Eric J, >>On the other hand, the fact that GPS satellites are still controlled by the U.S. military might not rest too well with the governments of some nations, who often have the ability to directly and indirectly exert significant amounts of influence upon the carriers.

What kind of influence are you thinking of? The military just turned off 'selective degradation' of the GPS signal, making it as accurate for commercial use as it is for the military. They have never turned it off as yet (the most reliable service provider ever in history <g>); its use is free; it is serviced by the government from the earth station for free (we all pay for it in our taxes), and they have never placed any demands or influence on the users in any form or manner so far as I know, they never plan to either. They do say however that they have the privilege to scramble, deny or turn off the signal in the event of conflict in the interest of national security. If you have any information otherwise, may I please ask you to share with us.
Best regards,
Sam A.
