many people seem to think that because the task is very difficult, maybe even impossible, that it should not be attempted.

FWIW, I can explain why I don't have much energy for this. I don't know to what extent it applies to anyone else. It's simply that I think that previous attempts have been misdirected to the point of making things worse. I don't want to see them carried further. I will find more energy for it when I see some movement in a promising new direction. Or at least some sign of capitulation from those who promote the same old direction.
