RETROSPECTUS

What is your pick in the resources sector?

"As with all resource stocks, BHP's share price reflects market concerns about a sharp slowing in global growth and an uncertain outlook in the United States and Asia. In a difficult environment, BHP is our preferred resources stock because of its low-cost, diversified asset base. The stock is priced on historically low forecast earnings multiples, especially assuming current oil futures prices. In the short term, favorable outcomes for BHP from the current iron-ore and coal negotiations are likely to be an important offset to the earnings impact of lower expected oil prices. They would also reduce concerns over near-term earnings growth from 2001. The driver for a higher share price is likely to be a steep change in earnings by 2004 from petroleum developments, particularly in the Gulf of Mexico, the Escondida phase-four expansion in Chile and numerous other new projects and initiatives.
