Can't type the whole article, no time.

This is from an IBD interview with Donald Kiernan, SBCs CFO on Friday. The majority of the article deals with SBCs position as far as the long distance market goes, FCC and rulings by the courts, the basic legal mess............
Only the last question dealt with COVD:

IBD: SBC invested $150 million in Covad Communications Inc., a start-up that sells high-speed internet access. With the stock prices of many start-ups depressed, could you acquire more local assets?

Kiernan: The Covad relationship gives us the ability to reach new data customers out of region. It complements our national expansion strategy. It's clear that prices have come down for (start-ups).
We continue to look at them; it's strictly a make-vs-buy decision. If we could acquire customers at less than we would spend to acquire them ourselves, then that would be a good situation for us.
End of interview.

"If we could acquire customers at less than we would spend" is the key. With COVDs debt, I would think that unlikely and even if they did the I don't think it would be an aggressive buy on the part of SBC.
