I'm not a doctor, don't even play one on TV, but as I understand it, blood sugar levels in diabetic ketoacidosis are typically in the 400 to 800 mg/dL, which is sky high - I've never had higher than 200 and that was only two or three times - usually post prandial in the range of 140, and fasting less than 120. Since I've been on the Atkins diet, fasting less than 100, post prandial less than 110.

I don't have diabetes, per se, I have impaired glucose tolerance (actually insulin resistance), which puts me at risk for developing Type II diabetes.
Ketones in the blood are a sign of uncontrolled diabete mellitis, but they are also a sign of fat metabolism (burning fat, either during starvation or on a restricted diet). The theory behind the Atkins diet is that the body will preferentially burn body fat if the diet is low in carbohydrates. |
