That depends on the server! By centralizing the applications, the server can use hundreds of megabytes (if desired) of memory for disk caching. Instead of putting the additional memory in the workstations, put it in the server. And instead of putting more CPU power in each workstation, put it in the server. A properly designed server, with enough processing power and I/O can handle a lot of workstations. And since the workstations will not have to handle the actual processing, they can be optimized for full motion video, sound, network access, etc. Sound familiar? I don't know for sure that HDSX is headed this direction, but it makes sense to do so. What I find is that educational institutions, banks and hospitals are spending a lot of money on workstations that mostly idle all day. Why not spend that money on the server end of things, which benefits everyone on the net?

Now if only my server company (TRCD) hadn't taken a dive recently. <g>
