AMD sees strong sales growth

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Advanced Micro Devices, echoing industry trade group projections, said Monday that weak U.S. sales in PC chips would translate into lower growth vs. rates of the past few years.
"There is some inventory to digest, but worldwide PC units will grow in the low to mid-teens in 2001," said Ben Anixter, spokesman for the chip-maker.

Appearing at the Banc of America investment conference in San Francisco, Anixter said AMD (AMD: news, msgs) overall sales growth is expected in the 35-40 percent range this year while the rest of the chip industry has lowered its growth estimates. Sales growth for the industry is now expected around 10 to 15 percent.

Anixter also said AMD's research and development budget would climb 15 percent to more than $700 million this year.
