Yes, I have sandy soil for the top 4 feet. The trees that got hit were poplars -- about 20 years old, 70' tall, 2' thick. Good morning and afternoon shade trees, but roots that follow the surface.

No tap root? If there is no tap root, then the next time you plant some poplar, build a basin around them and fill the basin regularly..at least once a week. That will deep water them and force their roots down to the level of the ground water. Check it out with the county horticulturist but it should work....it certainly works well in the West where water can be scarce.
