Ted, Re: <No tap root? ...>

Thanks for the tip on planting trees. I'd seen it said to do it that way, but not why to do it that way.

I've not yet started planting trees here -- just bought the place two years ago. I've got about 50 seedlings in the garden, and put in about400 square feet of seeds to sprout next spring(Walnut, Cedar, Pine, Spruce, & Maple). So I expect to be doing some planting for the next several years.

The poplars have roots all over the surface of the ground -- out 30' from the trunk. I think it's kind of like Maples. Some are OK, some aren't worth squat. I've about a dozen swamp maples around the place I want to get rid of. But at the same time I'm going to be planting some Sugar and Red Maples.

Re: <Why do you think the "FUZZ" got you when you got the water from your own wells?>

I think the *FUZZ* got me 'cause the law said you can't water your lawn when there's a water emergency on -- & I was sprinkling 30 GPM during the day. Next time I'll set it to fire off at night ;}! I think, however, that there should perhaps have been a selective emergency in effect.

The Delaware basin was hurting. It supplies NY, NY as well as most of the major NJ cities and Philadelphia.
Southeastern NJ has enough water to feed NY - NY, LA - CA, and Chicago - IL without breaking a sweat. It flows out to the ocean about 6-12' below the surface in a massive stream. By the time you're out on the barrier islands it's up to ~3' from the surface as it flows up and over the salt. I assume it's about like that all over the east coast -- but am only familiar with NJ.
