TGP, the reason given was to slow inflation. There hasn't been any inflation. The Fed raises interest rates to slow growth and increase unemployment. Greenspan used to believe that unemployment below 5% was inflationary. He was proven wrong, as we have sustained unemployment levels in the 4% range for some time now. Scumbria
