" We continue to believe that GPRS will be available, at best, in 4Q01 but more likely 1H02. Our bearishness is predicated on our belief that GPRS will be further delayed to due to: 1) interoperability issues between vendors' equipment; 2) technical issues; and, 3) lack of handsets."

"We believe that certain 3G deployments (specifically UMTS) will also be delayed due to the same reasons that are delaying GPRS, including: 1) interoperability issues; 2) technical difficulties; and, 3) a lack of handsets."

No doubt, Europe will creep down this rutted road - wrought by its own hand.

But what of China?

China has authorized a few GPRS upgrades - and is no doubt closely monitoring progress. How will China react to a lack of handsets well into the middle of 2002? How would continued disappointments effect China decisions?

"We believe that certain 3G deployments (specifically UMTS) will also be delayed.."

SSB is very specific regarding their 3G delay concerns - and they do not appear to involve 3G cdma2000. How will China respond if cdma2000 is ready - well - NOW, and UMTS is delayed well into the future - say 2004? Add to this equation the very real prospect (as evidenced by recent press announcements from TXN and Q) that multimode, multifrequency chipsets may be in production by this time... rendering roaming issues moot...

Actually, the report is rather remarkable in not addressing cdma-specific concerns at all...
