So Microsoft is going to go ahead and undo the rightest thing it's done throughout its existence: don't sweat petty end-user piracy, just go after the pro counterfeitters and the larger larcenous organizations.

In the 90's, a friend of mine who worked at Microsoft (who doesn't work there any more, long since retired multimillionaire) used to buy software for me at the Microsoft employee's store in Redmond where things were really cheap. This was not a peon, but a reasonably highly-placed guy who was AMPLY rewarded by M$FT management for helping their company.

I told him I wanted to install 3 copies of Windows 95 in my house, so I should buy 3 discounted licenses. His immediate response: "What? Why don't you just buy one and install it 3 times?" He saved me $20 or something.

Denial-of-service copy protection for a PC operating system is a non-starter, especially when instigated by M$FT. Anybody knows that. And it's not merely a stupid play that makes hackers into heroes: it's also a major tell that M$FT sees trouble on The Revenue Road Ahead. I guess they really did lose enough top management brain cells that they're starting to make dumb strategic decisions. Linux is way behind and has lots of problems, but this sh*t from M$FT, if it really happens (which I suspect it won't after everyone yells loud enough) would help it more than just about anything I can think of.

Gee, how does this relate to SunONE?<g>
