0806 [Dow Jones] WALL STREET: Industrial and consumer product blue chips were bought as defensive plays in slowing economy, while interest in tech stocks lessened; General Electric rose $1.57 to $47.85, Philip Morris gained $1.06 to $46.47. DJIA added 0.9% while Nasdaq eased 0.7%. "The interest-rate euphoria seems to be over, and now we have to rely on earnings," said Steven Kroll, managing director at Monness Crespi & Hardt; "the value names have reemerged, and the growth names are correcting." Chip stocks such as Micron Technology were weak after Semiconductor Industry Association said worldwide semiconductor sales in December rose 21.6% Y/Y but that it doesn't expect to meet its 2001 estimate for 22% growth because of supply overhang.(AXT)
