BRAMPTON, Ontario -- Nortel Networks Corp. is expected to announce as early as Tuesday the acquisition of a laser-making facility from JDS Uniphase Corp. for about $3 billion in stock and cash, according to a person familiar with the situation.

While talks were nearing completion late Monday, the deal could still hit a roadblock at any time, the person said. For JDS Uniphase, the sale is aimed at winning regulatory approval for its pending merger with SDL Inc. . . .

A Nortel spokesman declined to comment, as did a JDS official. Michael Foster, vice president of finance and chief financial officer of SDL, said the company "fully expects" its shareholders will vote on the JDS merger as scheduled Monday.
